The three purchases that gave us our mornings back.
Four ducks now run their entire morning routine without me: a door that opens itself, a feeder on a timer, and a waterer that doesn’t turn into a swamp by Tuesday. None of it required code. It required picking the right off-the-shelf gear, in the right order, against one rule: pay for automation once, or pay for the chore every single day for the life of the flock.
That rule is the whole starter stack. Here’s how to apply it before you buy anything, what we actually bought, and how to translate it to whatever animals or systems you’re running.
The test, before you spend a dollar
Three questions, in order. If a chore fails all three, automate it. If it passes even one, leave it manual – automation is expensive on money and attention both, and it’s not free just because it’s satisfying.
- Does this happen every day, forever? A once-a-season task isn’t worth automating. A twice-daily task is.
- Does paying once actually beat paying daily? Do the math on time, not just money – a $300 gadget that saves you a genuine forty minutes a day pays for itself in weeks.
- Does it join the system, or start a new one? One more app on your phone is a cost too. We run everything through a single dashboard (Home Assistant) on purpose – this isn’t a smart home, it’s an org chart, and the ducks are the first employees who actually show up on time.
What we automated first, and why in this order

Door first, because it’s the chore with zero flexibility – ducks don’t negotiate on sunrise. Feeder second, because a timed window does double duty: it trains foraging behavior during the day (ours patrol fire ants and ticks while hungry) instead of just filling a bowl. Water last, only because it’s the one piece where “good enough” (an open pan) technically works for a few days before biology makes it your problem – ducks eat noticeably less when water isn’t right next to food, so don’t skip this one, just expect to learn that the hard way like we did.
Real numbers, at list price, before local tax: door $299, feeder $229, waterer $99 – call it $630-690 landed, depending on your tax rate. That’s the automation only; housing is its own decision entirely (we bought a ready-made coop rather than building one, which is a whole separate argument about speed beating permanence).
The only outage we’ve had
Wasn’t the tech. It was a 200-pound pig named Eugene who decided the feeder was a toy with a prize inside, and played soccer with it until it broke. The fix was two 2x6s, some scrap posts, and a low estimate of how hard a pig will work once he’s already fed elsewhere at the same time: you don’t need to build unbreakable, you need to build not-worth-the-effort. Whatever your version of the pig is, budget for it – every real system meets an adversary eventually.
Make it yours
Swap the species, keep the shape. Whatever you keep – chickens, rabbits, a greenhouse, a garden bed – the same three slots usually exist:
- Access (a door, a gate, a valve) that runs on a clock instead of your alarm
- Feeding or delivery on a schedule instead of on your memory
- Water or moisture control that fails toward “fine” instead of toward “swamp” or “drought”
Fill those three slots for your setup, run the three-question test on each, and you’ve got your own starter stack – built the same way ours was, one purchase at a time, against an ROI you can actually measure.
